Having Trouble Feeling Your Feet?

Article by: Frank Cozzarelli

Peripheral Neuropathy is a disorder that affects over 20 million Americans.  Yet, until recently, there was no effective treatment to reverse the effects of this potentially incapacitating condition, which can cause extreme pain and numbness in the extremities, and in the worst case scenarios, lead to muscular degeneration and even paralysis.

Neuropathy is caused by damage to the peripheral nervous system, which transmits information to and receives information from every other part of the body.  The early symptoms are easy to ignore at first, starting as a slight tingling, pain or weakness in the hands and feet.  However, there is new hope for those suffering with Peripheral Neuropathy, as breakthrough surgical procedures are restoring the sensation in the extremities that was once lost due to the damage wreaked by this debilitating disorder.

“It’s just short of a miracle,” said Dr. John Cozzarelli, a local surgeon and podiatrist recently trained to perform the procedure as part of The New Jersey Peripheral Nerve Restoration Surgery Team at the Essex Surgical Arts Surgery Center located at 727 Joralemon Street in Belleville, New Jersey.
